Inlays & Onlays
Precision inlays and onlays for durable, natural-looking tooth restoration in Bangladesh.
What are Inlays and Onlays?
When teeth are quite damaged but don’t need a crowning, dentists go for inlays and outlays. These are dental restoration methods to fix partially damaged teeth.
Â
Inlays are custom-fit restorations for a tooth, fitting in its grooves, but covering only the center without going over the cusps of the tooth. Inlays are usually made of porcelain, ceramic, or composite resin to match the natural shade of your tooth.
Onlays: Similar to inlays but involve one or more cusps of the tooth and may extend over the entire surface of the occlusal. Sometimes, commonly made of ceramic, onlays are termed “partial crowns,” and are used to provide more reinforcement when restoring a tooth to its full strength.
The Inlay and Onlay Procedure
Initial Examination
The dentist typically examines a tooth, usually with the help of an X-ray examination, to determine the extent of the damage. Thereafter, based on his findings, he will decide whether or not the use of an inlay or onlay is suitable.
Preparation of Tooth
The area is anesthetized and the decayed or damaged portion of the tooth is removed, after which the tooth is shaped with respect to inlay or onlay placement.
Impression and Custom Design
A digital scan or mold of the tooth is taken and sent to a lab in order to fabricate an inlay or onlay that will precisely fit. A temporary restoration may be placed in order to protect the tooth while waiting.
Fitting and Bonding
The temporary restoration is removed at a subsequent visit, and the dentist fits the inlay or onlay custom-made. It is then permanently bonded to the tooth, polished, and adjusted for a comfortable fit.
When are Inlays and Onlays Recommended?
Inlays and onlays are indicated when the damage or decay in a tooth is too extensive for a filling but not serious enough for a full crown. They are ideal for restoring the strength, functionality, and aesthetic conditions of a tooth while maintaining more of its natural structure.
Aftercare Instructions
Patients should not eat any hard or sticky food for the first 24 hours. Basic flossing and brushing and dental check-ups are required to maintain inlays and onlays for long periods.
Benefits of Inlays and Onlays
Aesthetic Appeal
Inlays and onlays give a natural look as the materials used match well to the color of the tooth.Â
Durability
They are sturdy and durable, with the tendency to often outlast traditional fillings.
Functionality
These restore proper bite and chewing while conserving more of the natural tooth structure.
Less invasive
Require less healthy tooth material to be removed compared to crowns.Â
